A shoegaze miracle: wondrous, cosmic, reverb-drenched haze from a genre’s true pioneers
Slowdive at Concrete & Grass. It’s been a long time coming.
We are often guilty, as a generation, of pandering too much to nostalgia. But to see Slowdive, to hear them, is to find power in resilience. It’s the realization that nostalgia, our aching millennial nostalgia, isn’t always merely a yearning for the past, but a yearning for something lasting.
Everything solid melts into smoke, but Slowdive did the opposite: they resolutely stayed. To listen to them is to find the power to believe. And to hope.
Their immaculate and serene sound was sidelined in the early 1990s by a Britpop-obsessed press, but now the soft-focus shoegaze sound they pioneered is everywhere, from DIIV and Tame Impala to The 1975. Their return after 22 years in the outer wilds is made no less remarkable by the startling cosmic clarity of their new album. A reverb-haze daydream, comforting yet never too familiar.
Slowdive left us with three perfect albums, aged like fine wine. How remarkable that we can say there is now a fourth, with more to come. It’s nothing less than magic in our midst.
