Black Star is Talib Kweli & Yasiin Bey (formally Mos Def). The duo arose from the underground movement of the late 1990s. They released one album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star in 1998, which quickly rose to critical acclaim and is praised as being one of the greatest hip-hop albums of our time. Black Star has continued to help shape underground alternative hip-hop and bring it further into the mainstream eye. Though these major forces in the hip-hop scene click together in a truly special way, they have gone on to greater commercial and critical success in separate solo careers.
The duo have only released one album, but throughout the years Black Star has stayed active － in 2012 they even found themselves on prime time TV performing to a massive live audience on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” ahead of their U.S. tour.
They’re not shy to the big screen either: in 2006, Mos and Kweli appeared together in the movie Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, alongside Erykah Badu, Common, Jill Scott, Dead Prez and The Fugees, among others. They contributed a new song, “Born & Raised”, to the movie’s soundtrack.
Their last release was in 2011 – an Aretha Franklin inspired Mix CD entitled Black Star Aretha. The first release from the Mix CD, “You Already Knew” was produced by Oh No (Stones Throw). In 2014 they reunited for a mini-Europe tour, which OkayPlayer regarded as an iconic moment in musical history. Their appearance in China will be a watershed moment for the spread of hip-hop in the Middle Kingdom.
